POINTS TO PONDER
By: Denise Imbody

Recently we had a guest speaker at our church. He is a born again Christian that loves to study dinosaurs. He shares with us different facts as he discovers them. At his last visit he said something that I thought was really profound and thought it would make a great POINTS TO PONDER--and the best part--I don't think you can get BACK TO THE BASICS anymore than this. :)

He asked us if we knew what UNIVERSE meant. He went on to explain how folks think the universe is the vast seeming unending stars, planets, etc out there in the expanse.

Then he told us what UNIVERSE really meant. He said that UNI means "One", and VERSE means "Statement. Therefore UNIVERSE means "One statement", and that "One statement" could be found right at the beginning of our Bibles.

Yes, that is right...Genesis 1:1 in several versions of the Bible says this...

NIV
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

NASB
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

NLT
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

KJV
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

NKJV
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now, I know that different versions seem to say different things at times, or should I say word things differently, but I just love that they all word that "One statement" pretty much the same way..just thought it was an interesting thing to think about.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

My wife, Cathy, has to remind me on occasion, "We have a Messiah. He's doing very well, so don't replace Him!" If your schedule is consistently out of control, then I highly question how your primary relationships - God, spouse, family, friends and even your own body - can be in order.

Back to the Basics
By: Barbara Lea Campbell

We hear the phrase "Back to the Basics" often, but do we really understand it? What does "Basics" mean? One of the definitions I found is "a starting point."

The Basics are the fundamentals -- The Base on which we build. So where do we start? At the beginning of course!

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

The Word has always been and always will be and the Word is Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 3:11 tells us He is our firm foundation "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

There is no better place to start! When we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we open our hearts up to a relationship with Him and the only way to nurture that relationship is by spending time with Him. How? in the Word. There we hear Him as He teaches us.

Burlap to Cashmere recorded a song a number of years ago called "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth" -- an acronym for BIBLE. How true it is! The Bible provides all the Basics we need -- it is the living and active Word of God (Heb. 4:12)

It is our guide book -- our instruction manual -- our fundamental base... The Basics. It is totally up to date and complete -- no updates or supplements required!

So let's get back to the Basics -- let's form a base and build a sure foundation -- Jesus Christ -- the Living Word of God.

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

We really should be getting into Godís word, as much as we possibly can. We would like to encourage you with a challenge each month, to memorize a portion of Scripture. So, we will provide a passage, and hope that you will take the time to study it daily. If you are already doing this on your own, that is great--we just thought with prayer, and making it a bit easier for some folks, that we could help those who may not be doing this yet. All passages will be from the King James Version of the Bible. We do not mind other versions, and you can study it in whichever version you like. We have chosen KJV, because it is public domain. We pray that you will hide His word in your heart.

Psalm 19
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Blueberry Pound Cake

1 cup plus 2 Tbsp. Butter or margarine
2 1/4 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1 tsp. baking powder
2 cups blueberries, washed
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp vanilla

Grease a 10" tube pan with the 2 Tbsp. of butter. Sprinkle the pan with 1/4 c. of your sugar. Set aside. Cream remaining cup of butter and 2 cups sugar.

Add eggs one at a time. beat well after adding each egg. Add vanilla. Combine 2 3/4 c. flour, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture and beat well. Dredge blueberries in remaining 1/4 c. flour. Fold blueberries and flour into mixture. Put in tube pan and bake at 325-degrees F for 1 hour 10 minutes or until done. Cool in pan 10 minutes before turning out on plate to cool completely.

I have also made this in loaf pans -- regular size loaf pans and mini-ones. I do just as above except I use the loaf pans and fill them a little over half-full with the batter. You can also wrap the loaf... or slices from the tube cake... tightly and freeze. YUM!

QUICK TIP OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

When using blueberries in recipes for baked goodies like cakes or muffins, save a bit of the flour called for in the recipe and toss the blueberries in it before adding them to the recipe. This helps prevent the berries from falling to the bottom of the baked item.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Have a friend or family member who does needlework? A pincushion is a fun, useful, and easy to make gift. Or maybe you need one for yourself.

There are lots of patterns online and in books. Here is one I came up with recently for some friends.

You need a small container. A coffee mug or tea cup works well, as does a small terra-cotta pot. I recently found the cutest miniature metal watering cans in the craft section of Walmart to use for my pincushions. Other options include a small bowl, basket, votive candle holder, or even a small decorative box. The possibilities are endless.

You will also need some polyfill, a styrofoam ball (that fits in your container), fabric, and glue (I used a hot glue gun).

Fill your container half full with polyfill. Next, cut the styrofoam ball in half with the flat side up. This will keep the pins and needles from falling through to the bottom.

Take a circle of fabric -- about 2 to 3 times the size of the container's opening. Run a line of thread around the edge of the fabric, leaving the ends loose. Fill the center of fabric with polyfill, then pull both ends of the thread to close the fabric, creating a "pillow." Tie off the thread tightly to close the opening. Your pillow should fit in your container on top of the styrofoam with part of it (the pillow) sticking out to create the pincushion.

To secure, put glue on top of styrofoam. Place pillow on top and press down firmly. Let dry for 30 minutes to 1 hour before inserting pins.

You can add lace, ribbon, or beads around edge if desired. These are easy to make and cute to boot!

***If you have an original recipe, quick tip, or craft, that you would like to share with us, please send it in with your first and last name, and your email address to Precious_Stones@JEMMinistries.org. SKIPPING STONES
(A word of encouragement)
By: Denise Imbody

The Basics Of Life
by 4 Him

Weíve turned the page, for a new day has dawned
Weíve re-arranged what is right and whatís wrong
Somehow weíve drifted so far from the truth
That we canít get back home
Where are the virtues that once gave us light
Where are the morals that governed our lives
Someday we all will awake and look back
Just to find what weíve lost

We need to get back
To the basics of life
A heart that is pure
And a love that is blind
A faith that is fervently
Grounded in Christ
The hope that endures for all times
These are the basics,
We need to get back
To the basics of life

Take a look at that first stanza for a moment. Isn't that so true of what we have become? A Nation once based on Christ, now just shut Him out of everything.

Every other religion is okay and allowed, but do not mention Christ, or else.

Now, please take a look at the second stanza. Aren't those words just full of truth and wisdom? That is truly what we need to be doing. We, Christians, need to demand our rights back. We need to stand up and say, we will no longer be silent, or complacent.

We need to put Christ back into Christianity, and back into our lives. If we can get back to the basics, it will be just as it should be.

Children will respect their parents and elders.

Neighbors will look out for each other.

The church will be helping those in need, so that the needy will not have to go to the government for help.

Children will not be killing each other, but instead, will learn to play and work together.

And the list could just go on and on and on.

Let's get on our knees and pray for the basics to become real in our country again.

BIBLE QUIZ

In this section, you will find five questions each month, along with the Scripture reference (unless of course, the question is asking where you can find something in the Bible). We pray this will help you to get to know Godís Word more.

Since we're discussing getting back to the basics of LIFE, I thought I would do a little Bible Drill for this month's quiz...so where can you find the following?

1. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

2. Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates.

3. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

4. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

5. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

CD of the Month: WIRE by Third Day
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

WIRE by Third Day

I have to warn you that I am a major Third Day fan, so I cannot imagine them releasing anything I wouldn't love. WIRE gets back to the basics..... to the roots of Third Day. It is a rocking ride that sends your heart soaring to Heaven in praise and worship. "Come on Back to Me" reminds us that the Lord has loved us even before we were... and that if you've strayed off the path, it is ok... He is right there waiting for you, still loving you. "Blind" is the child crying out to the Father saying "How could I have been so blind to not see you. The more I look the more I find." The theme of this CD seems to be that we are nothing without Him. A great reminder for all of us.

Book of the Month: Abram's Daughters Series and other books by Beverly Lewis
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Abram's Daughters Series and other books by Beverly Lewis

I have enjoyed Beverly Lewis' books for a number of years now. Lewis grew up in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country and has a heritage of Plain folk from her mother. As a result, a great many of her books are set in Lancaster County and focus on the Amish community there.

Abram's Daughters is her latest series. There are currently three books available (The Covenant, The Betrayal, The Sacrifice) with a fourth book due this fall (The Prodigal).

Abram's Daughters follows the life of the Ebersol family and others in the community of Gobbler's Knob at the close of W.W.II. It is a moving saga as the reader watches four young "Plain" girls deal with their old older Amish life... some embrace it, some run from it.

Like other books by Lewis, these are full of rich images and details which bring the Amish lifestyle to life for the reader.

I highly recommend Lewis' books -- especially this series (Abram's Daughters) and her Heritage of Lancaster County Trilogy (The Shunning, The Confession, The Reckoning).

Web Site of the Month: Bible Reading Plan Sites
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

We've been talking about getting back to the basics and what better way than to get into the Word each day.

You can just read on your own each day, picking and choosing Scripture as you feel led. You might want to try reading a chapter from the book of Proverbs each day for a month, or you might choose any of the Bible Reading plans available online.

We often talk about starting a Bible Reading Plan around the first of the year, but there is no reason to wait until then. You are perfectly free to start reading at any time of the year. God has no set rules. He just wants to meet with you each day in His Word -- to talk with you, guide you, teach you, encourage and direct you.

Here are some sites that offer Bible Reading plans which can be started at any time:

Whatever plan you choose get back to the basics by getting into the Word.

JEM'S PUZZLER OF THE MONTH

In this section you might find a word search, An unscramble the words, OR any kind of word puzzle. We hope you will have fun with it! ‹

How do we get back to the basics with God? Follow the directions below to find an answer:

Using the King James Version of the Bible, look up Ps. 119:104 and find the fifth word in the verse. Write it down -- it is the first word in our answer.

Now go to Hebrews 8:10 -- it's a long verse, but a good one! We learn that the Lord put His law ________ their minds. The word that goes in that blank is word number two in our answer.

Next find the second word in John 1:1 and add it to the other two we have so far.

The last word to our answer is found in Eph. 6:17 -- it is the 16th word in this verse.

So now you have four words -- put them together and you have an answer to our question.
