JEM-PRECIOUS STONES
(Issue #44 -- ALL WHO ARE THIRSTY -- August 2006)

This summer has truly been a hot one -- and our family's thirst has reflected that fact. Our recycle bin has been twice as full the past several months with water bottles, juice containers, milk cartons and other various drink holders -- it's gotten to the point that we have TWO recycle bins instead of one! Thank God that His Living Water doesn't leave us thirsty! Can you imagine all the "throw aways" there would be if we needed to keep going back for more? His river satisfies us for eternity! Thank You, Lord for Your refreshment!

In His Service,
Matt

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Do you have an opinion or thought that you'd like to share with JEM-Precious Stones readers? Well, here is your chance...if you'd just like to comment on the E-zine or if you have something on your mind about current events that you'd like to share...as long as they are clean and family oriented and NOT against God and His Word...please feel free to share them with us, and we'll use them if we can.

Most have been experiencing very hot weather. When we have this weather it makes us very thirsty. We go to the fountain again and again and still we are thirsty. We know that when we need a drink or refreshment where to go to be satisfied at least temporarily anyhow. But we still have a problem we still thirst.

God has invited us to His well of living water that never shall run dry. And as we take more and more of Him in -- in His Holy word or in praise and worship and prayer, we can truly be satisfied not just for a moment but for eternity!

INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT
By: Jan Dobens

God has shaken the very core of my being. He has challenged me to cut off any behaviors that are an abomination to Him. When I began asking Him to strip away all of Jan and fill me with all of Him, a refreshingness has been enveloping me. When I go to church and we are worshiping, from my whole being I praise the Lord. I feel such a thirst for more and more. I believe I was worshiping before and serving the Lord but now I feel that hunger and thirst, that craving with in for more! I cannot be still, I want to praise Him and give Him glory!

Psalm 63:
1. O God, thou art my God; earnestly will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee, In a dry and weary land, where no water is.

What a dry land we live in now on this earth and God can change that, we do not have to walk around with gloom and doom! Earnestly seek Him and He promises He is there ready to fill you up! It is there, He is just waiting, we are in control of this.

Psalm 63:
8. My soul followeth hard after thee: Thy right hand upholdeth me.

Follow hard after Jesus!
Pray, sing, seek, worship, and obey!

Isaiah 44:
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

Matt 5:
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

It is a promise people, hold on to it!

Thank you Jesus for your promise of filling us with your spirit!"

WORD IN ACTION
By: Barbara Lea Campbell

Recently at our church's midweek service, folks were discussing all that is happening in the Middle East... specifically concerning Israel and Lebanon. The conversation kept on and on with a hopeless tone to it. As I sat and listened, my heart heard the Lord say "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem." I remember several years ago while reading the Bible during my quiet time, I came across Psalm 122:6 which tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. It just popped out at me as if I had never read it before. I knew this was a direct command from the Lord. So as I sat listening to Him whisper this to my heart, I knew He was reminding me of what He wants us to do in light (and in spite) of all that is happening in the World.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
"May those who love you be secure.
May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels."

For the sake of my brothers and friends,
I will say, "Peace be within you."

For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your prosperity. Ps 122:6-9 NIV

We are not to fret about the Middle East. Yes, we can feel concern for the people there... and we can grieve at the pain, suffering, and loss. But we must also pray... specifically for the peace of Jerusalem.. Israel, God's chosen people.

It seems an impossible thing to imagine peace in Israel, but remember.. NOTHING is impossible for the Lord. And also keep in mind that the peace we pray for should not be the world's peace.... we want the Father's peace.... we want true peace in Jerusalem.... lasting peace for Israel... and that is only found in the Prince of Peace.... our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Let's put the Word in Action... let's heed the command of Psalm 122:6 and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

ALL WHO ARE THIRSTY
By: Denise Imbody

August can tend to seem like the longest month of the year. It is definitely the hottest and that accompanied with there being absolutely no holidays in that month as well. It makes most of us feel dry and thirsty, and in need of a cooling relief from its steamy days.

A few years ago, a friend and I were reading the Bible in a year through together, and we were talking about how August was approaching...and if that wasn't bad enough, we had to read the Book of Job in that month. Now Job is not an easy book for either one of us to have to read, but we did it and made it through. But before the month and that particular book began, we both were dreading it. We endured the suffering of both of those at the same time, though, and I know the Lord blessed us for it.

One of the benefits we experienced is that when the next year began, and we began to read our new year Bible plan, both our families decided that they wanted in on this, and that is something she and I had been hoping and praying for...so imagine our surprise when they let us know.

Are you feeling like you are in a dry and barren land right now? Does the desert seem longer than you thought it could ever be? Well, hang in there and look to the fountain that we have in Jesus. He is where our strength comes from, He is our everlasting stream of life, and He will help us get through some of the hottest, thirsting, what seems to be never-ending times. Believe it is so. Seek Him, pray, read, lean on brothers and sisters that He has placed in your path along your journey. We need to be continually doing these things, so that when we are in these rough times we don't just throw in the towel and say "Forget it!" or "I quit!"

There is a beautiful song out there that goes like this...

All who are thirsty
All who are weak
Come to the fountain
Dip your heart in the stream of life
Let the pain and the sorrow
Be washed away
In the waves of His mercy
As deep cries out to deep
(We sing)

Come Lord Jesus come (x3)
Holy Spirit come (x3)
As deep cries out to deep (x2)
by: Brenton Brown, Glenn Robertson

This info was taken from the following site:
http://www.ap0s7le.com/list/

I've been finding myself singing this song a lot, and it truly does help remind me of where my strength comes from, and how I can continue on...hope the lyrics help someone else along their hot and dusty road...just stop and drink in the love of Jesus...it will renew you!

THINK ABOUT IT!

Why can't we build orphanages next to homes for the aged? If someone's sitting in a rocker, it won't be long before a kid will be in his lap.

TESTIMONY TIME

My Testimony: By Denise Imbody

Here I am finding myself writing a testimony, because no one came forward to give one, and even though I have many things I am thankful about I am finding it hard to write a testimony. Maybe that is why we do not get many submissions for this section--I don't know--but it makes me wonder at times if we should remove it from the E-zine. Then I think...that is exactly what the devil wants...he would be so happy if we remove this section from the E-zine, because then we won't have a section where folks can share thanks and praises for the Lord. I know we have said this before, but I think it is worth mentioning again...this section is NOT just for salvation testimonies...it is for any type of testimony that gives thanks and praise to our Lord and Savior. :) On that note, I am going to try and share a testimonial like that...

I have been a born again believer for some time now, and it's taken me a long time to get to the place where I finally feel like the "real me" can come out...I can actually be who the Lord made me to be. I have learned and am still learning how to speak the truth in boldness and love. It is hard to do this sometimes, but the Lord gives us the strength that we need to do as He asks. :)

I know one of the things that have helped me get to this place in my life, besides prayer that is, actually reading through God's Word. This is another testimony--so I guess I am giving 2 testimonies here--I am on my fourth year of reading the Bible through in a year.

Like I have mentioned in previous articles, the first year I read through with a friend. These last few years I have been reading through with my family. We are in the middle of our third year through together, but this is my fourth year, because of the previous year with my friend. It is so exciting to get into His Word. It is like opening a new present each year. He is constantly showing me things I have never noticed before, even though I have read them many times, and it is an awesome experience.

Getting into God's Word has helped me grow a lot in my walk with Him, and I believe it has helped me become who I am today.

Is it easy to read the Bible through in a year? No, not really. There are times we get really behind, but the Lord always is good to help us catch up. In fact, we are behind right now, but again, I know He is going to help us catch up. :)

This testimony is turning out differently than I had planned, but that is okay...I love it when the Lord takes over and does that. :) I just would like to thank our Heavenly Father for how He helps us each day, and how He has helped me grow, and I know He is going to continue to do that for me...and you, if you so choose. :)

Just pray and ask Him to help you, and read His Word...it is truly important to do these things. It is like that acronym goes the BIBLE is...

Basic
Instructions
Before
Leaving
Earth

...this is how we get to know our Lord and Savior...through prayer and His Word!

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

We really should be getting into Godís word, as much as we possibly can. We would like to encourage you with a challenge each month, to memorize a portion of Scripture. So, we will provide a passage, and hope that you will take the time to study it daily. If you are already doing this on your own, that is great--we just thought with prayer, and making it a bit easier for some folks, that we could help those who may not be doing this yet. All passages will be from the King James Version of the Bible. We do not mind other versions, and you can study it in whichever version you like. We have chosen KJV, because it is public domain. We pray that you will hide His word in your heart.

Matthew 5
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

My kids always wanted Ice Cream Cakes for Birthdays... they are good, but can get costly. A friend made her own. She told me what she did and I adapted a bit. It can still be costly unless you catch ice cream and such on sale... but the best part is it is easy to customize with the ice cream flavors and the fillings.

When I make one, this is what I do... no measurements... I line whatever size pan I am using with heavy duty foil. I take ice cream (what ever flavor you want) and let it soften a bit.. put in the pan until about 1/2 way up the side. Then I add cookies or candy (Sprinkle on top of ice cream.. don't stir in) ... we like crushed butterfingers the best. I have never added toppings like fudge or butterscotch, but I am sure that would work. I stick this in the fridge and let freeze for an hour. Take it out and add another layer of softened ice cream... either the same flavor or a different one. Cover with foil and freeze.... usually over night. I then turn it out onto a tray and pull off the foil. I like to frost mine with that whipped frosting you can buy... it seems to go on better than traditional frosting. You can use any flavor you want. Once frosted, I like to put it back in the freezer for a bit (or as long as you want). To serve, I let it sit out about 10 minutes and cut. We love these!

QUICK TIP OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Denise Imbody

Tired of the season changing colds, and scratchy throats? Well, we have a tried and true remedy for you. :)

Take 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey, and 1 or 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar (keeping it equal), and stir them into a warm cup of water that you zap in the microwave real quick.

Gargle with it 2 or 3 times, and repeat this procedure (always making a new mixture each time) a few times a day for a few days, and you'll notice that your cold seems to disappear a lot faster.

SIDE NOTE: Some folks enjoy drinking this mixture and you can do that if you'd like, but we never have...we have just used it for gargling.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Denise Imbody

I thought it would be a great idea to make a wishing well. Although I would like to call it a WELL OF BLESSINGS or a WELL OF PROMISES, or something to that kind of title. :)

Materials Needed:
empty can (probably the size of a can of nuts or something like that.)
Popsicle Sticks
Glue
Construction Paper
Markers
Scripture Verses

What to do...

1. Cut a piece of construction paper ( the color of your choosing) to fit around the outside of the can.
2. Glue it around the can.
3. Take the popsicle sticks and glue them together to form a roof for the top of the well.
4. Glue 1 popsicle stick to each corner of the roof (so you should have 4 popsicle sticks hanging down).
5. Glue the other end of the sticks to the can.
6. Write ALL WHO ARE THIRSTY on the outside of your can.
7. Find one of your Favorite Bible Verses and write it on a separate piece of paper, and glue it wherever you like to your well (be sure not to cover up the words ALL WHO ARE THIRSTY.
8. There you have it a little decoration to remind you to go to the never-ending well, Jesus, anytime you need to do so.

(Option)
You could also use your well as a bank, and maybe give the proceeds to wherever the Lord leads. :)

SKIPPING STONES
(A word of encouragement)
By: Stephanie Hurd

Dehydration

Recently my family spent a week camping in the mountains. My 11-year-old and her friends found an abandoned baby bird, who was clearly dehydrated. They informed the caretaker of the camp, and her first instinct was to give the bird lots of water. Thankfully she spoke to a local animal hospital before doing this. She was advised to never give a baby bird water alone as they cannot close their airway to allow it to pass into their crops. They drown easily and their air sacks are very susceptible to bacterial infections. Instead she had to create a mixture of moistened bread and worms for a temporary solution, into a paste with water and place it in the crop with a 1cc syringe, without the needle. She had to insert the syringe in past the windpipe and inject it slowly into the crop. The windpipe is the hole directly behind their tongue. This method had to be repeated every 15 to 20 minutes to keep the bird from dehydrating further.

What about the baby Christians we encounter? Do we have the instinct to initially pour water down their throats? It is easy to hold a revival and praise God for the crowd who went to the altar. It is natural to rejoice over our family member's or closest friend's salvation. Don't misunderstand me; truly this is awesome! I remember my own beginning of my walk with the Lord. I was on fire! I was eager to guzzle the water. I ran the risk of quenching the fire. However, I have noticed something about thirsting for the Lord. When the Bible speaks of water, it often is flowing and has movement. For instance Isaiah 48:21 says, "They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out."

This water was constantly stirring and thrilling. It wasn't stagnant. Likewise, baby Christians cannot gulp down the Lord and call it a day. They and we all need the constant flowing water of the Lord as it is the living water that sustains us! John 7:38 reads, "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."

How can we help the baby Christians and our brothers and sisters of any maturity? We are called to encourage and lift one another up, to pray for one another, and to preach the word. We are to stir up that living water in order to prevent it from growing torpid. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 states "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." Ephesians 6:18 says, "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."

All who are thirsty for the Lord will be sustained by living water; a current without ceasing. It isn't one large glass of Christianity and then we are done. What has become of the baby bird? He was sustained by continual yet palatable nourishment. He wasn't given one huge amount of water, but rather was given steady controlled liquid. He is thriving and will be set to fly soon. How about you, are you helping your brothers and sisters to fly?

BIBLE QUIZ

In this section, you will find five questions each month. Scripture references will sometimes be provided, but other times you will have to seek out the answers. We pray this will help you to get to know God's Word more.

1. In Exodus 17 what did Moses smite so the Israelites could have a drink?

2. According to Judges 15 who said, :Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"

3. What is the Scripture reference to the following Verse?
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

4. According to John 4, what was the name of the well that Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at?

5. According to Romans 12, if you give food or drink to your enemy, what will it be like you are doing?

CD of the Month: Hymns: Ancient & Modern
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Hymns: Ancient & Modern Live Songs of Our Faith from the Passion Worship Band

The Passion movement has been wowing college students for years. These conferences feature speakers such as Louie Giglio, John Piper and Beth Moore. They also highlight some wonderful Christian musicians. Hymns: Ancient & Modern is a live recording of the music performed at Passion's Thirsty Conference for Leaders in 2003. As you might expect, this CD consists of traditional hymns of the Christian Faith, however they have been modernized a bit either musically or with the addition of lyrics or both. All of the tracks are wonderful... but some of the best, in my humble opinion, are Chris Tomlin's "O Worship the King" and "Raise Up the Crown"; David Crowder Band's "Doxology" and "All Creatures of Our God and King"; and Matt Redmon's "Here is Love". If you grew up with hymns, you will enjoy this fresh take on some classics. If you are not familiar with hymns, this is a great way to become aquatinted!

Book of the Month: SHE
Recommended by: Kristina

SHE, the book by Christian recording artist Rebecca St. James and author Lynda Hunter Bjorklund, was written with the goal to help women see who God made them to be. SHE stands for Safe, Healthy, and Empowered, and this book sets out to expose the lies the media bombards women with, whispering that a woman must be beautiful, thin, and sexy in order to be happy.

The first line of the book says it all: "Something's wrong." Thus begins the first of eleven chapters, each one tackling a different issue faced by today's Christian woman. Complete with Bible verses and real life stories, SHE covers everything from the new femininity, to thwarting temptation, to emotional healing. On a completely personal note, I found this book to be a huge source of comfort. In this day and age we are sometimes influenced by the culture around us, and along the way we can lose sight of what it means to be a beautiful woman of God. This book helps to guide the searching woman back onto the right path, and back into Scripture for the answers to her questions.

I highly recommend this book for any woman out there who would like a little encouragement in being who God made her to be. I will certainly be passing SHE on to my female friends and relatives.

DVD of the Month: LarryBoy and the Bad Apple
Recommended by: Denise Imbody

The folks at BIG IDEA have done it yet again. This time with another installment of their LARRYBOY series (I am not talking about that awful cartoon that they tried for a bit there, but the REAL LARRYBOY). This one is titled LARRYBOY AND THE BAD APPLE. This episode deals with how temptation can very subtly creep into our lives, and entangle us in a deceptive web, until we are so deep that we most definitely need help getting out...there is just no way for us to get ourselves out.

During this episode you will see Veggie Tales newest member Petunia get sucked into her weakness of video games, Alfred--LARRYBOY'S sidekick--drawn into his weakness of a TV Show, and even Larryboy himself gets caught up in his weakness which I will leave as a surprise for you. :)

At the very end we see Bob talking with Larryboy and wanting in on this Larryboy action--do we see a possible future sidekick in the making? :)

There are great new songs throughout this episode, including a brand new LARRYBOY theme song--ROCK ON LARRYBOY!!! ‹
