JEM-PRECIOUS STONES
(Issue #19 -- Children of The King -- July 2004)

Wow! What a hard issue this was to put together! Did you know that satan doesn’t want you to realize how valuable you are to God? He wants you to stay wallowing in your self-pity and depression – unable to rise above it all, and unable to help others rise! He wants you to feel useless – and therefore, BE useless...

But God wants you to know the Truth! He wants you to know that you must let go of the lies that the world has burdened you with – so that you can be free to be who He created you to be! He wants you to know that, as His child – His heir, you are royalty – you are valuable -- you are loved!

So, who you gonna’ believe?

In His Service,
Matt

POINTS TO PONDER
By: Stephanie Hurd

Recently our pastor spoke about Zephaniah. As in many of the books of the Old Testament, God dealt first with judgment, but then His anger subsides and He talks about the remnant. Anyway, we came across a nice passage. It was:

Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Many times I have pictured our awe and joy over the Lord and how we will be singing and praising Him, which is naturally true. This scripture shows God's delight over His people and it is incredible to imagine His singing and joy in this way. Just a POINT TO PONDER.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."
--Romans 8:15-17

HOPE AND JOY
By: Barbara Lea Campbell

Hope and Joy
© 2/12/2002

I read this in my various Quiet Time readings this morning:

"Hope infuses the mind and heart with joy
and gives us the deep confidence that we are God's
forgiven children and that He will never let us go."
-- Barbara Johnson -- Daily Splashes of Joy

I think of Romans 9:38-39 when I read that quote ....

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels
nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will
be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ
      Jesus our Lord."

God will never let us go! Nothing can separate us from Him. What an awesome promise!

Yesterday as we shared about our Quiet Times, the children and I talked about being lights in our world. We noted how as Christians we should always have a joy inside us that shines out no matter what our circumstances. Why?

First and foremost because God so loved us that He sent His one and only son! and because of Romans 9:38-39 -- we are His and no one can take that from us!

1 Peter 2:9 reminds us that we "are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that (we) may declare the praises of Him who called (us) out of darkness into His wonderful light."

As a chosen one -- royalty -- a princess -- part of a holy nation -- someone who belongs to God -- I should beam with His light!

Yes life can be rough --

Yes things don't always go my way --

Yes it can be unfair -- sad-- difficult -- frustrating -- painful -- and so much more --

BUT I am a child of the King!

He "created my inmost being"

He "knit me together in my mother's womb"

"I am fearfully and wonderfully made"

His eyes "saw my unformed body"

"All the days ordained for me were written in (His) book before one of them came to be"

How awesome!

Am I living as a child of the king -- a princess?

Do I walk with the confidence of one who is chosen?

Do I let His light shine through?

Do I act as if He has me in His hand and nothing can separate me from His love?

Do I act as one forgiven?

Do I revel in the knowledge that God created me and had a plan for me long before my conception?

Oh Father -- help me to remember all these treasures! Not to fill me with pride, but with JOY! You are the Creator -- Maker of Heaven and Earth -- Almighty God -- the great I AM! And yet You loved me so much You sent Your son to die for my sins that I may be with You always! You loved me enough to choose me -- to make me holy and "royal" -- to fill me with Your light -- to wrap me in the cloak of Your love. Help me to walk as Your child -- to let my light shine -- to hold up my head and meet life head on knowing You are in control!

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

We really should be getting into God’s word, as much as we possibly can. We would like to encourage you with a challenge each month, to memorize a portion of Scripture. So, we will provide a passage, and hope that you will take the time to study it daily. If you are already doing this on your own, that is great--we just thought with prayer, and making it a bit easier for some folks, that we could help those who may not be doing this yet. All passages will be from the King James Version of the Bible. We do not mind other versions, and you can study it in whichever version you like. We have chosen KJV, because it is public domain. We pray that you will hide His word in your heart.

1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

QUICK TIP OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

A good trick when you go away on vacation is to place a baggie with a few ice cubes in the freezer. If a power failure occurs while you are gone and the food thaws and then refreezes you will know about it when you get home.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Play Dough Surprise Balls

This is a fun treat you can fix up for any child. We use these in Bible School!

You will need a batch of homemade playdough for this. Here is the recipe I use:

1 c. flour (plain all-purpose) 2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 Tbsp. cooking oil 1/2 c. salt 1 c. water

Mix all the ingredients in a large pot and cook over low hear until a ball forms -- you will need to stir while cooking. Remove the mixture from the pan and knead it. Once it is smooth and the right consistency for playdough, you can create the Surprise Balls.

There are 2 ways to do this --

One way is to pinch off pieces of dough and roll into little balls (about the size of those bouncy balls that come with jacks). Poke a small hole in the ball, don't go through all the way, and drip one drop of food coloring into the hole. Seal it off. When the children begin to play with the plain balls, they will "magically" change colors!

OK -- I have to tell you that the food coloring is fun, but messy! So here is the other way --

Make the balls as above, but instead of poking a hole in them, flatten them out a bit into circles. Then add a pinch of glitter into the center of each circle and carefully pull the dough up to recreate a ball. The glitter will appear in the dough once the children start working it with their hands. You can use just one color of glitter or try a multicolor blend. Be creative and have lots of fun!

***If you have an original recipe, quick tip, or craft, that you would like to share with us, please send it in with your first and last name, and your email address to Precious_Stones@JEMMinistries.org. If we use it, you will get full credit, but please know that due to the number of contributions, and other concerns, we will not be able to use all submissions.***

SKIPPING STONES
(A word of encouragement)
By: Denise Imbody

1 Timothy 2
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

We would like to just take this time to ask you to please remember our troops, as well as our government officials, in prayer. Remember that they are out there fighting so we can be free, and enjoy all the luxuries that they are unable to enjoy right now.

Whether you agree with those in authority or not, it is still our responsibility as Christians to hold them up in prayer, and our Heavenly Father will help, lead, and guide them.

I, personally, would like to challenge you to just take a few minutes each day to remember them (and yes, I am speaking to myself here, too)...I have not been praying as much as I should be either. :)

And hey, if at all possible, maybe you could write someone, or send a care package to someone that is over in Iraq.

If you don't really "know" of anyone...there are always ways to find someone. For example, I was on an email list that had a military wife on it, that was taking donations for Christmas care packages, or would give you info on how you could send an ecard, email, or regular snail mail, etc...so there are ways to reach someone in our troops.

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for those men and women who have left their families to go defend our country, and help in the efforts of freeing another country. Please be with each and everyone of them. Touch their lives in a special way, and if there is one that does not really know You, we ask that you will bring one who does know You to them, so that they can know that they have a Savior, and Lord who is with them at all times, and will give them the strength they need as they serve, in Jesus' name, amen.

CD of the Month: Hands Lifted High: Classic Worship Songs with Dennis Jernigan & Friends

Hands Lifted High: Classic Worship Songs with Dennis Jernigan & Friends

Recently while shopping in a local Christian bookstore, I was moved by the music playing. I occasionally recognized a voice, but the main singer was new to me. On inquiry, I was led to this CD. It will not be the last Dennis Jernigan CD I purchase.

Jernigan may not be a well-known artist to all of us, but that in no way diminishes his talent or heart. He has a rich voice and his love for the Lord shines through in his singing. Hands Lifted High consist of 14 duets -- some with well known Christian artists such as First Call, Twila Paris, Russ Taff, and Natalie Grant. This is a worship CD, but it is much more than just praises choruses. These are worship songs -- they draw the listener into a state of worship where you will soon find your Hands Lifted High.

Book of the Month: Christian Heroes: Then and Now
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Christian Heroes: Then and Now by Janet and Geoff Benge

Over the last few years, I have become fascinated with Christian biographies. There is such a rich heritage of faith and perseverance that I learned nothing about in church or my Christian school as I grew up! It is amazing to see how God continues to use ordinary men and women to further His kingdom.

Christian Heroes: Then and Now is a series published by YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Publishing for youth and young adults. You can view a list of the books available at their website (http://www.ywam.org)

(Side note: There are activity books and guides to enable you to create unit studies with some of these books.)

I have read these myself, given them to my children to read, and even used them as read alouds. They are well written biographies chronicling the exciting, challenging and deeply touching stories of such Believers as Gladys Alyward, Hudson Taylor, Jim Elliott, Amy Carmichael, and so many more.

If you want to read about our heritage as Believers, this is a great starting point... and include your children. It is never too early for them to learn about those who have come before.

Video of the Month: A Snoodle's Tale: A Lesson in Self-Worth
Recommended by: Matthew Imbody

You won’t have to spend three months in Danish emersion camp to love this instant classic! The first story is a child-friendly adaptation of “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, called, “Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly”. Through this little tale, the lesson that everyone is “special just the way God made you” is aptly conveyed – but, by far, the crowning Jewel of this release is the title story, “ A Snoodle's Tale”. It has quickly become one of my favorite veggie releases thus far. Told in a Dr Seuss style, this wonderful allegory shows both children and adults alike, that we don’t need to carry around all the lies we have been told us about ourselves. They only weigh us down! The Creator knows who we really are – and His opinion is the only one that matters! Check it out!
