JEM-PRECIOUS STONES
(Issue #6--June 2003)

Hello, and welcome to the June issue of JEM Precious Stones!

This month we are thinking about father's day. Sadly, we don't all have a perfect father on this earth. Some of us might not even know our dad, but God has given fathers as an example so that we can know more about Him.

What should an earthly father be like? The mirror works both ways, because the example that God has given us, is in it's perfect form, what He is! He is a loving Father that gives good gifts to His children. He is our strength when life crumbles around us, and He is our righteous judge and our stern disciplinarian when we need chastening.

If you don't have a father like God, be comforted, because you can have a God that will be your father! If you do have a father who strives to be like God, be appreciative of him and his example that has brought you closer to understanding who God is!

Come with us as we pay tribute to Dad...

In His Service,
Matt

INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT
By: Denise Imbody

John 17
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Filled with love
And protection, all
The days of my life my
Heavenly Father has always
Enveloped me in His care to
Rescue me from death!

POINTS TO PONDER
By: Matthew Imbody

In this section we will look at the scriptures closely, and see if what we have come to know as the truth is found in God's Holy Word.

What's Jesus' name?

You might say "Jesus, right", with a nervous little giggle Ė and, if you did, you would be only partly right.

Jesus is a translation of a Greek name, which was translated from the original Jewish name. That name is Yashua. Directly translated from Hebrew to English, we come up with a very familiar name: Joshua.

Yes, Jesus has the same name as the man who lead Israel out of the wilderness and into the promised land. It is a subtle prophesy that we so often overlook -- of the one who would lead us out of this world of sin, and into eternal life! The name Yashua literally means, Jehovah is his help, or Jehovah the Saviour.

Are we wrong to call Him Jesus? Certainly not. Our faith isn't based upon a name alone. It is based upon the mighty hand behind that name! The hand of God Almighty! No matter what language you speak, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ (Yashua Ha'Mashiyach) is Lord!

HEARING DADDY'S VOICE
By: Barbara Lea Campbell

A few years ago, my family was gathered at my brother's home with my mother to celebrate Easter. My brother had pulled out some old home videos and had them playing while we visited. Many contained previous Easters when the children were younger -- they were so cute all dressed in their spring attire hunting for Easter eggs. It was fun watching them grow up before our eyes on the screen.

After watching a bit, we became more involved in conversation and left the videos to run on their own. Everyone was talking to someone else in the room ... the house was far from quiet and yet, in the midst of the noise, I was stopped in mid-sentence as I heard my father's voice. I remember choking out the words "That's Daddy" and then turning towards the voice only to realize that it was on the video that was playing at that time.

You see my dad had gone home to be with the Lord 2 or 3 years earlier, so hearing his voice gave me such a start! I searched for his face on the video, but alas the camera-person had been busy taping children at play with their grandfather's voice in the background. I cannot tell you what he was talking about except that I am sure it was nothing profound. He was probably telling a story about his younger days or about my brother or me or commenting on something a grandchild was doing. There is truly no telling! But I can tell you that just hearing his voice made my heart swell.

How was it that I could recognize a voice I had not heard in years? Easy -- I had spent many years listening to it. It was and still is ingrained in me. I can close my eyes right now and hear my dad as clear as if he was sitting right next to me. That is so awesome to me.

But you know something more awesome and more important than recognizing earthly voices? Recognizing God's voice. God speaks to us ... we just need to learn to recognize His voice.

How do we do that? The same way I learned to recognize my dad's. By spending time listening to Him and in conversation with Him. You must spend time alone with God. Talk with Him. Pour out your heart to Him. Get into His word and ask Him to meet you there ... to speak to you. He will. Don't try to force it or make it more difficult than it has to be. Just relax and converse with Him like you would with your parent, a sibling or a good friend. The more time you spend talking with and listening to God, the easier it will become to recognize His voice. It will become familiar to you. It will become ingrained in your brain.

And then, when you are in the midst of madness and think the world is spinning out of control, you will be able to hear your Father's voice over the din and it will stop the madness racing inside you and make your heart swell, as you listen to Him love you and guide you.

"My sheep hear My voice." John 10:27a

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Matthew 11:15

Father -- we are Your sheep -- draw us to You daily that we might spend time talking to You and listening to You. Help us to learn Your voice quickly and to be able to recognize it above the din of life. In Jesus' name we pray -- Amen.

A MOMENT OF 'HA HA'

A wise person truly said, "It ought to be as impossible to forget that there is a Christian in the house as it is to forget that there is a ten-year-old boy in it."

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

We really should be getting into Godís word, as much as we possibly can. We would like to encourage you with a challenge each month, to memorize a portion of Scripture. So, we will provide a passage, and hope that you will take the time to study it daily. If you are already doing this on your own, that is great--we just thought with prayer, and making it a bit easier for some folks, that we could help those who may not be doing this yet. All passages will be from the King James Version of the Bible. We do not mind other versions, and you can study it in whichever version you like. We have chosen KJV, because it is public domain. We pray that you will hide His word in your heart.

Hebrews 12
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Blueberry Stuffed French Toast

6 slices of homemade-type white bread, crusts cut off, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 8-ounce package of cream cheese, chilled and cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup blueberries, picked over and rinsed
6 large eggs
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 cup milk

For the sauce:

1 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
1 cup blueberries, picked over and rinsed
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter

Arrange half the bread cubes in a buttered 13-inch X 9-inch glass baking dish. Scatter the cream cheese over the bread and sprinkle the blueberries over the cream cheese. Arrange the remaining bread cubes over the blueberries. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, syrup and milk. Pour the egg mixture over the bread mixture and chill, covered, overnight. Bake the "French Toast", covered with foil, in the middle of a preheated 350-degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake toast for 30 minutes, or until it is puffed and golden.

Sauce: In a small saucepan, stir together the sugar, cornstarch and water. Cook over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until it is thickened. Stir in the blueberries and simmer the mixture, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the berries have burst. Add the butter and stir the sauce until the butter is melted.

Serve the French Toast with the Sauce. Serves 6 -8.

This recipe can easily be double or tripled for larger groups! Very Good!

Cleaning Hands

Grimy hands -- Hands that are very grimy can be cleaned by massaging in a thick paste of oatmeal and water.

Removing stains and/or odor -- Use the cut half of a lemon or some lemon juice for removing stains from hands and then whitening them. Use vinegar to remove strong food odors, such as fish.

CRAFT OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Barbara Lea Campbell

Fingertip Pussy Willows

Needed:

white paint or white ink pad

paper -- moderate to heavy weight works best, like construction paper, and it needs to be a color for the white to show -- sky blue works very well

brown marker OR brown paint with thin line brush

fine tip marker -- brown or black

a child's fingers ‹

If you have never seen a pussy-willow, then this will be a difficult craft to make! If your memory needs jogging, find a picture of a pussy willow online or in a plant book to use as a guide.

Draw a stem for each pussy willow you will be creating. It is neat to do one stem per child. This can be drawn with a brown marker or using a paint brush and brown ink.

Paint your child's finger tips with the white paint (a sponge brush makes this an easy task) or press them onto the white ink pad. Use the child's finger tips to make the white fuzzy pussy willows going up the stem on each side.

With a fine tip marker, add the child's name and the date at along the bottom of the stem.

Add any other embellishments to your picture that you would like. Frame and present to Dad on Father's Day.

SKIPPING STONES
(A word of encouragement)
By: Denise Imbody

Psalm 68
3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.
6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

When I was very young, I lived with my grandparents. To this day, I still don't know all the ins and outs of how all that came about, but I do know one thing--that the Lord was with me all the way through it. He took care of me,and watched over me, and kept me safe, even before I knew who He really was.

When I learned of the truth of Him, and His Word, I began reading the Bible. Whenever I came across verses that talked about being forsaken by your mother and father, or ones that talked about Him being a Father to the fatherless, it was such a refreshing comfort to me. I realized then, that while I NEVER had anyone down here on earth, to call Daddy, that I did Have a Daddy--and that my Daddy cares for me, more than any earthly father could ever care for their child.

The Lord has sent a few different older men on occasion to fill the earthly fatherly void, but nothing, or no one will ever compare to Him--my Heavenly Father. I did not say that to take away from any fathers that are truly there for their children and family. The Lord has blessed me with a terrific husband, and he is a great father to our 3 children. That is one of the reasons that I chose the above passage of Scripture--even though I had a home to grow up in, I always wanted a family that I could call my very own--and He was good to give me that, too.

I felt compelled to share this, because I know that I am not the only one that grew up without a father. I am hoping through these words that the Lord is helping me type, that others will see that they too have a Father that cares so much for them, that He sent His only Son to die, and rise again for them. That He has been taking care of them, just as much as He has taken care of me. Even if you do not see any physical evidence of Him being there, just know that He always has been, and always will be.

I would like to end by saying HAPPY Father's Day, ABBA FATHER!

Book of the Month: The Power of a Praying Wife
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie OMartian

I first started hearing of this book about four years ago. The title intrigued me. I prayed for my husband on a fairly regular basis. I had a number of lists and prayers I had received in email and articles that I sometimes used -- things like 31 days of prayer for your husband or what to pray for your husband. I wasn't sure I really needed something else and yet, I kept hearing people rave about this book. So I bought it.

I now understand why they rave about it. Omartian speaks frankly with wives about the importance of praying for our husbands daily. "It's a way to invite God's power into your husband's life for his greatest blessing, which is ultimately yours, too." She knows this daily prayer works -- she has seen it in her life and that of her husband, Michael.

There are 30 prayer chapters in this book which cover everything from your husband's work and finances to his health and relationships and everything in between. There is even a chapter where you pray for his wife!

Omartian developed these prayers over the years for her own husband. In each chapter she talks about the area of prayer and tells how God led her to pray certain scripture for her husband. She also includes a prayer in each chapter and then "Power Tools" (Scripture verses). One thing I love about her prayers is that they are all based on scripture.

Many women pray through this book for a month -- using one prayer a day. I encourage wives to first read through the entire book. It helps to be familiar with the prayers. My book is all marked up and written in and dog-eared. I have used it for specific prayer needs and I have used it with the one month of prayers method. No matter how you use it -- use it!

I can think of nothing more important that a wife can do for her husband than pray for him every day!

Movie of the Month: A Man Called Peter
Recommended by: Matthew Imbody

A Man Called Peter

Based on Peter Marshal's life story, this film had me hooked almost instantly even though I only caught part of it. It is about a man who finds God's calling on his life in the fog of his native Scotland. Following God's leading, he becomes a preacher in the United States, and is given the opportunity to preach to laymen, soldiers, and even congressmen. He never pulls any punches, or strays from the truth, even after he is asked to lead congress in prayer as their official chaplain.

His sermons and prayers are inspired, and inspiring -- and his story will surely bring a tear to your eye. So, crank up the VCR and get ready for some wonderful family entertainment!

You'll hear songs that talk about how Jesus humbled himself and came down here for us--to die, and rise again, so we can live--to how it will be when we are with Him in Heaven. All ages will love this CD. So, gather your family, turn the stereo on, and have a glorious worship time!

JEM'S PUZZLER OF THE MONTH

In this section you might find a word search, An unscramble the words, OR any kind of word puzzle. We hope you will have fun with it! ‹ Answers will be in next month's issue.

BREAK THE CODE

Below you will find a list of names of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. Each has been written using a substitution code. For example, if X stood for J in the code, and Y for E, Z for S and M for U, then JESUS would be written XYZMZ.

Your job is to crack the code and decipher the names. The same code is used for the entire list, so if you figure out what B stands for in one word, then you know it stands for the same letter in all the words.

Here is a hint to get you started - K = R

And remember, these names are found in John, so feel free to read your Bible to find the answers! ‹
