JEM-PRECIOUS STONES
(Issue #33 -- STAND -- September 2005)

ďStand up for what you believe in.Ē Thatís what the VeggieTales have been telling us to do for several years Ė and itís so true. How much have Christians lost because of apathy? How much has slipped through our fingers due to our ignorant complacence? How much ground has the enemy taken as we sit back and do nothing? Itís time to STAND, people! Time to stand up for what we believe in...

In His Service,
Matt

POINTS TO PONDER
By: Denise Imbody

Ephesians 6;NLT
10 A final word: Be strong with the Lord's mighty power.
11 Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the Devil.
12 For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms.

God's Armor--ever wonder what that is?

Well, there is no need to wonder, for the next few Verses, in this very same chapter, explain what it is...and I thought we'd look at each piece closely. :)

Another question I'd like to ask--have you ever considered that you are fighting against satan and his demons, instead of the person/people that are unfortunately unknowingly being used by them? I know I forget this at times, and well--I am sure you can figure out that makes things worse, because in our flesh we want to lash back at them. If we can keep in mind that it is not really the person/people then maybe we can make things better before it is too late.

Now on to the pieces of God's armor...

13 Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm.

Before we look at each piece, I'd like us to look at Verse 13--notice it says use EVERY piece of His armor--not just one, or some.

14 Stand your ground, putting on the sturdy belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness.

BELT OF TRUTH and BODY ARMOR OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Okay, well, those are the first 2 pieces mentioned. How can we know what the "TRUTH" is? By reading His Word. More importantly, praying before reading, that the Lord will open our eyes and help us to see what He'd like to reveal to us during that reading. Also, we need to ask Him to help us to apply it to our lives. We want to be living examples. We don't want to "just read" it--but we want to live it.

If we learn His truth then His righteousness will be our body covering--or as other versions put it--our breastplate--which guards our hearts. He will protect us.

15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News, so that you will be fully prepared.

AW! Shoes for beautiful feet. Beautiful feet are those who bring the Good News Of Jesus to those who do not know. These shoes are a perfect fit, and can help us STAND firm in our belief.

16 In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan.

How many times has satan thrown those fiery arrows at us--trying to trip us up--and knock us off our feet? Too many for us to count, I'd venture to say. I am sure he's knocked us down quite a few times, too, but the good thing is we can get back up because we are God's children. :)

A way to hold that SHIELD OF FAITH up high, is to memorize Scripture so you can recall it to your mind and heart as you need them.

17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The HELMET OF SALVATION and the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT--we all know that we are no good in and of ourselves--we are only good because of the salvation that Jesus brings to our lives. Because He has been so gracious to us, He gives us enough grace to get through trials--for it says in His word that His grace is sufficient for us (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The SWORD OF THE SPIRIT--This is where you can use those Verses that you have memorized, and shut those lies, from the devil, right up--for He doesn't like it when we begin quoting God's Word--so say them out loud, and clear. If you are ever in one of those moments, when you are just so afraid you can NOT even recall one Verse, then just call for Jesus--and satan will flee.

18 Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.

I think Verse 18 is a great Verse to end on, and what a powerful Verse to ponder...I know that I am NOT always thinking that I need to pray for fellow Christians everywhere--so I know that Verse has really jumped out at me, and spoke to my heart!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

The greatest proof of Christianity for others is not how far a man can logically analyze his reasons for believing, but how far in practice he will stake his life on his belief.
-T. S. Eliot (1888-1965)

--Back to TABLE OF CONTENTS--

"Standing on the Promises of Christ my King
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God."

When I saw the theme of this month's e-zine, I immediately thought of this hymn and of Rich Mullins' amazing song...

"So if I stand, let me stand on the promise, that You will pull me through..."

Much has been said about standing... standing firm. When Jesus told the disciples about the things to come.. the things that must be.. the famines, pestilence, wars and rumors of wars, He also told them...

"When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Luke 21:28 NIV

We are to put on the armor of God in order to stand...

"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Eph. 6:11 NIV and

"Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Eph. 6:13 NIV

I love that last phrase.. "after you have done everything, to stand"... we are to put on our armor, prepare for battle, and then to stand. What a powerful image that is!

Can you imagine how it must look to the enemy when we go forth in full armor and stand? He cannot prevail!

So how do we stand? I mean the Bible tells us to stand.. but how do we do that? Do we just determine that we are going to stand and so we do it? Well, we could.. but we would probably fall down with the first hint of advance from the enemy. 1 Cor. 2:5 KJV says "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." We do not stand in our own wisdom or in the wisdom of others, but in the power of God.

So where do we find that power? In the living, active Word of God.

Look at these verses on standing...

Rom. 5:2 NIV "through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God."

We stand in His grace!

1 Cor. 15:1 NIV "Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand."

We take our stand in the Gospel!

2 Cor. 1:24b NASB "for in your faith you are standing firm. "

We stand firm in our faith!

Phil. 4:1 NASB "Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved."

We stand firm in the Lord!

As the hymn says "Standing on the promises that cannot fail... by the living Word of God I shall prevail.. Standing on the promises of God."

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." 1 Cor. 16:13

TESTIMONY TIME

My Testimony: By Stephanie Hurd

Coming to Christ can be fun! We all know that wonderful feeling when we are cleansed by the blood of Jesus, and to accept Him as our personal Lord and Savior changes our lives for ever! But the way in which I came to know the Lord was fun too.

I am the youngest child of 4 daughters. I grew up in a small seacoast town in southern Maine. My sisters and I were similar in many ways, and yet one thing stood out about myself. I was born with a rare degenerative eye condition, which left me legally blind. I really felt I had two worlds for some time. I grew up attending public schools, had friends, played outside and did what other children would do. And every summer since I was 9 I would attend a camp for the blind one week each year.

For many years I "blindly" attended this camp. I met other kids who had vision issues. We went swimming, boating made crafts, and had a wonderful time. Many of the same kids returned year after year. I did too. It was a sort of retreat into this other world.

The reason I say that I "blindly" attended was because each year the salvation message was told to the campers by the staff. God was planting seeds, and I never even payed attention. Still, they were there. A desire to know Him was in me, even without having a foundation of a church to build on them. Each year I remember asking my parents to attend Christmas Eve services at church. Once in a while we went, yet mostly they were too tired to attend by the end of the day. It was Christmas and yet they were too tired to acknowledge Christ? That just didn't seem right to me, even back then.

As the years went by, I made plenty of mistakes as a teenager, trying to figure out which road I wanted to walk on. And God pushed me to a point where I could not ignore those planted seeds any longer. How faithful He is to us! No matter how the rest of my year went, I still attended the week long camp for the blind. In fact I found another camp just like it in another state, run by the same organization, and attended that one as well. Sure I loved the activities and friendships, and yet I was also still hearing how the Lord died for my sins, and how I could have Him in my life too. So you see, as I was hearing the word of God, I was having fun at a place that offered connection with others and enjoying the outdoors.

Finally, when I was about 19, another camper friend sat down with me and prayed with me, as I accepted the Lord. My life was not my own any more as I chose to live as Christ's. I won't say my path was easy after that, as we all know that life is a journey in growing in the Lord. I still had to go home and face the fact I had no local church to build on right away. I read the Bible without teaching, yet God still kept hold of me. And my family then thought I was some sort of cultist. So there were a lot of things to work on and grow, yet I praise the Lord every day when I wake up and know He loves me.

The friend I prayed with is now my husband. We will have been married 14 years this month. We have a nice home to live in, 2 beautiful daughters, a local church family, and the Lord blesses us continually. Is the story over? No, we are to run the race to the finish line, and face our trials and our joys along the way, yet we can be confident that the Lord will work out all things for good to them who love the Lord!

CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH

We really should be getting into Godís word, as much as we possibly can. We would like to encourage you with a challenge each month, to memorize a portion of Scripture. So, we will provide a passage, and hope that you will take the time to study it daily. If you are already doing this on your own, that is great--we just thought with prayer, and making it a bit easier for some folks, that we could help those who may not be doing this yet. All passages will be from the King James Version of the Bible. We do not mind other versions, and you can study it in whichever version you like. We have chosen KJV, because it is public domain. We pray that you will hide His word in your heart.

Romans 5
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Submitted by: Kimberly Lewis

Applesauce Drop Doughnuts

3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup applesauce (homemade applesauce made our doughnuts even better)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (I have left this out on many occasions and the doughnuts are still great)
1/4 cup milk
oil for deep frying
additional sugar (to roll the doughnuts in)

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in applesauce and vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk. *(the batter will be VERY thick)* In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 375. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter a few at a time into the hot oil. Turn with slotted spoon and fry until golden, about 1 minute each side. Drain on paper towel, roll in sugar while still warm.

Yield....about 5 dozen doughnuts

Keep That Lunch Cool!

Use your child's drink to keep their lunch cool in their lunch box. Freeze juice packs or boxes overnight. Toss into the lunchbox the next morning. The juice will thaw and be a bit slushy by lunch, and will keep food in the lunchbox cool until then also.

SKIPPING STONES
(A word of encouragement)
By: Jan Dobens

Temptation:

Did you know that you do not have to give into sin? In 1 cor 10 13, we are given a promise that we always have a way out.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.

How awesome! When the devil, your friends, and even yourself are trying to convince you that there is no way out of a situation, quote this scripture and if you call on the Lord, he will fulfill his Word.

Think of these key words.

You can bear it
God is faithful
He will not allow anything to tempt you that you are not able to handle
He will always make a way out!
God will give the strength to have power over it.

Movie of the Month: The Wilderness Family
Recommended by: Denise Imbody

The Wilderness Family is about a modern day family (1975), and is a great movie for all ages.

The family of 4, Skip Robinson (Robert Logan), his wife Pat (Susan Damante Shaw), their daughter Jenny (Hollye Holmes), and their son Toby (Ham Larson) is tired of the busyness of the world in their home town of Los Angeles, and decide that they would like to move to a nice quiet area.

They move to a deserted mountain, and encounter many adventures. Shortly after moving, they escape an avalanche, and find that a momma bear has been killed by it, and they find her cubs, and take them home to care for them--this is just one of the first of many adventures on their long journey of their new life.

While experiencing these adventures they contemplate whether they made the right decision, and if they should stay or head back to civilization.

A little bit of caution--the younger kiddos might be frightened by some of the wild animal scenes, but all in all, it is a great movie for the whole family.

Book of the Month: The Healing Quilt
Recommended by: Kristina

The Healing Quilt by Lauraine Snelling is a story about four women, each from very different backgrounds, who come together to help the women of their community. When Kit's aunt Teza learns she will have to face breast cancer for a second time, Kit comes up with the idea of creating a beautiful quilt that can be auctioned off, with the money going towards a new mammogram unit.
Each woman tries to hide her own pain as they begin to piece together the quilt. Kit tries to deal with the death of a child and the subsequent abandonment of her husband, Beth battles to hide her painful depression and heartbreaking secrets, Elaine longs to find some meaning in her life amidst loneliness and a distant husband, and Teza tries to hold everything together as she grows more and more sick.
But as their lives slowly begin to unravel, the women learn that they are not as different, or as alone, as they once thought. They have friends who care about them, and a Creator who loves them more than they ever knew. The Healing Quilt is a wonderful story about the power of love and of finding the strength to put the past behind you.

Web Site of the Month: Worship Together
Recommended by: Barbara Lea Campbell

My son discovered worshiptogether.com -- what a great site! You will find free sheet music (it changes each week), Bible Studies, Articles and each week they focus on a specific worship leader. They also offer CDs, books and other items for sale. The main focus here is worship... worshiptogether.com strives to provide what you need to enhance your worship experience. It is a great place for those who lead worship. It is also a great place for any Christian who wants to become more worship centered in their daily life. One of my favorite parts are the Bible Studies. They are really more like devotions and many are written by Christian songwriters telling the story behind their song. Be sure to look through the archives.. there is so much there! At NewSong Cafe' (another part of this site), you can watch videos of worship leaders as they talk about their music and ministry. There are even lessons there for those who play guitar. Worshiptogether.com also provides forums and email lists for various discussions. (Membership required for these -- membership is free). The site also has online Bible resources -- the Bible, a Bible Dictionary, Commentary and Topical Search Engine. Take some time and go browse around http://www.worshiptogether.com There is something there for everyone!
